The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, used across Northern Europe from roughly the 2nd to 8th centuries. Its 24 runes are grouped into three ættir (families) of eight. Each rune carries a sound, a name, and a web of meaning drawn from the old rune poems. Hover a stave for a quick reading.
